February 1997

Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver

Ten days after we officially became a couple!  Nothing could wipe the smile off of our faces!  We were simply glowing for a few weeks.  Gloria even failed a lab exam (partly because she wrote "DOUG" instead of "DRUG as an answer")!

May 1997

For Doug's surprise 20th birthday present, Gloria had local artist Heather Price draw a portrait of the two of us based on two photographs.  What a wonderful surprise it was!

September 1997

Pacific Starlight Dinner Train, Porteau Cove

For Gloria's 20th birthday, we went on a dinner train to Porteau Cove.  Gloria was the recipient of twenty gifts that day!

February 1998

One-year Anniversary, Vancouver

We made it through one year!  Through the first twelve months, we got into a lot of arguments about friends, family, time, school, work, priorities and so on.  Nobody said that being in a relationship was easy!

May 1998

Beluga Encounter, Vancouver

For Doug's 21st birthday, we went to the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park and participated in a program called the "Beluga Encounter."  We learned about the whales and got in the water to touch and feed them.

February 1999

Bloedel Conservatory, Vancouver

We made it to two years with much less difficulty than with the first year.  Doug was finishing off his Bachelors degree and was interviewing at medical schools from UBC to Memorial University of Newfoundland.  The uncertainty about what would happen for the next four years was nerve-wracking for both of us!

August 1999

Rhapsody of the Seas, Alaska

Fortunately, Doug got accepted into UBC Medical School and started in August 1999.  Before that, we went on our first cruise together - to Alaska.  We had such a great time that it started an addiction to cruising!

June 2000

Gatorland, Orlando

Gloria completed her Bachelors degree in May 2000 and soon after, we went to Florida for vacation.  Being kids at heart, we soaked in the fun at Walt Disney World before heading to Miami to sail to the Eastern Caribbean.

June 2000

Megan's Bay, St. Thomas

Our second cruise was aboard Celebrity Cruises' ms Century.  We were awed by the beautiful colour of the waters in St. Thomas.

July 2001

Georgetown, Grand Cayman

Gloria finished her hospital residency and Doug completed the preclinical years at medical school.  We loved our first cruise to the Caribbean so much that we had to go back the next year for more!  This time, we went to the Western Caribbean.

August 2002

Grauman's Chinese Theater, Hollywood

Doug fractured his right tibial plateau playing softball just four weeks before a planned vacation in 2002.  The trip continued nonetheless (non weight-bearing, on crutches or in a wheelchair) and we did our best not to let it ruin our precious time off together.

August 2002

Malecon ("boardwalk"), Puerto Vallarta

It was indeed quite difficult for Doug to navigate through the streets of Puerto Vallarta in 35 degree temperatures.  We must say that Mexico is definitely not handicap accessible!  Nevertheless,  Doug didn't let crutches stop him from enjoying the views from the beaches in Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, although he couldn't make it off the ship in Cabo San Lucas

March 2003

Visitor Centre, Lake Louise

During a conference in Banff, we enjoyed some of the beautiful winter scenes at Lake Louise.  Unfortunately, the lake was frozen solid with warnings not to wander onto the ice.

May 2003

MD Graduation, Vancouver

Doug finally had to give up his Student Price Card after eight years of post-secondary education.  Once again we were worried about what would happen next, as Doug was applying country-wide again - this time for a residency position.  Fortunately, Doug matched to UBC and we would not be geographically separated.

June 2003

Acropolis, Athens

A four week trip to Europe ensued.  This photo was taken a day after the ship had left us behind in Naples (it's a long story)!  That didn't blunt our spirit as we managed to catch up with the ship in Athens.  We've never had such good gyros as the ones in Monastiraki Square  - and for only 1.50 Euros!

June 2003

Bosphorus River, Istanbul

Istanbul was one of the highlights of our Mediterranean cruise.  Cruising into Istanbul provided us a unique opportunity to experience the Blue Mosque, St. Sophia, and the Topkapi Palace.  We enjoyed shopping at the Grand Bazaar, buying spices from the Spice Market, and drinking apple tea from the carpet swindlers!  $10,000 carpets, anyone?

June 2003

St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice

After ending our Mediterranean cruise in Venice we decided to check out the the views from St. Mark's Cathedral.  We toured the Doge's Palace where the "secret" tour of the prisons almost killed us from heat stroke!  We also went over to Murano to see the Venetian glassmakers, and watched gondolas glide through the Grand Canal from the Hotel Bauer.

January 2004

Climbing Dunn's River Falls, Jamaica

We returned to the Western Caribbean in 2004 on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas.  We had the opportunity to feed the stingrays, climb a waterfall, and swim with the dolphins.

May 2004

Yavapai Observation Station, Grand Canyon

We decided to check out the Grand Canyon after spending a few days in Las Vegas.  What gorgeous views!

September 2004

Lizards, Cabo San Lucas

In autumn 2004 we went from Pacific to Atlantic through the Panama Canal.  We couldn't resist taking a picture with the local lizards!

September 2004

Quaint beachfront, Huatulco

We made a short stopover in the lazy beach town of Huatulco, Mexico on the way to the Panama Canal.  It was such a quiet, peaceful day on the beach... we had most of the beach to ourselves!

May 2005

Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey

We went on a driving trip (not a cruise!) through the wineries in Northern California.  We also had fun visiting the Aquarium and Cannery Row in Monterey.

January 2006

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney

We went to Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong on an extended vacation.  Click to see our Travel Diary with more pictures.

May 2006

Cecil Green Park House, Vancouver

WE GOT MARRIED!!!  See our Wedding in Review Highlights Slideshow and Wedding Photos.  Also check out our Photographic Honeymoon Diary!
